Drapers Of Glastonbury

Updated: Oct 3, 2022

I stumbled across this fourth generation sheepskin manufacturer in Glastonbury. They have been making footwear since 1937 and are now the last sheepskin factory left in Somerset, traditionally the heart of the industry. Nick who runs the factory with his son, showed me around and allowed me to take photos of his staff and machinery, many of the processes are exactly the same as they were in the beginning. It has been a really difficult year for the company as many of the elderly staff had to shield and were off work for 5 months. There was no government support and they have had to work hard to keep the business going.

The factory is in the shadow of Glastonbury tor and during my visit there was a constant stream of tourists coming in to pay their £3, a convenient secondary income from the factory car park.
